Admiral multi car renewal issue

Any advice welcome please. I am a long term customer of Admiral and receive all communications electronically. Last year I received a renewal email and they tried to increase my policy by 20% when I rang them they managed to get me a better deal close to my previous year’s cost. This year I did not receive an email and they have increased my premium by 20% without me noticing. I am sadly outside the renewal period and cooling off period sadly by only 1 day so they will not help me. I have over 20 years no claims am in my 40s and have only claimed for windscreens x 2 in the past 5 years. I appreciate that I am partly to blame as I did not make a calendar entry to remind me that my policy was due to be renewed, I only contacted them when I saw an email from them about my home insurance. I feel the 20% increase is unjustified does anyone feel this is worth pursuing? I doubt I will keep my home insurance with them.

I'm not sure why you don't keep the diary entry in every year and then shop round each year for cheaper insurance. Unfortunately new customers are always treated favourably in terms of price than existing customers.

I don't think there's anything you can do about the price increase this time and will have to take it on the chin but remove your auto renewal from your current policy and put a diary entry (or preferably a calendar entry on your phone so it will alert you) about 3 weeks prior to your renewal date next year and shop around. You may be surprised with the prices.

I would reckon that at this stage they would be unlikely to renegotiate this years premium so really your only options are to suck it up or to leave and go elsewhere but you'll probably suffer a hefty cancellation charge (which may well be more than the 20% uplift you've suffered so you're likely to be no better off).

Have you done any dummy quotes for alternatives (although you may find that despite the increase they are still the cheapest for your circumstances). At the least if the quotes are lower it would give you some info to challenge their premium should you actually decide to give them a call.
  • Thanks for the replies you live and learn even at my age, I will implement a reminder system for next year and not rely on admiral to email me. I will enjoy the small consolation of switching my home insurance to another provider as I don’t feel it’s justified but I am old enough to know that all the insurance companies do it. Taken on the chin
