Default stopping mortgage

I've had a default payment of £51 come up on a hard credit check and Santander now will not proceed with mortgage application despite me having had a mortgage in principle with Natwest.
This default was paid. The information I have is that it was Feb 2009, and settled 2017. It was with British gas so most have been a bill that came through after I left the property and moved away on a contracted job where I had no Bill's to pay so hadn't then set up anywhere and this would have stopped me being traceable. As soon as the payment did catch up with me 8 years later I paid it. Can I now not get a mortgage despite 10years worth of no defaults

  • Go to a all of market broker they can work with it and get something for you.

Natwest' Agreement in principle has nothing to do with Santander.
Every lender has their own criteria and way of scoring your application.

Also, if you got the Natwest Agreement in principle yourself (rather than through a broker) it is a soft footprint which means it may not be 100% accurate - but the default appears to be within Natwests criteria as it has been satisfied for a while.

A default from 2009 would have dropped off your files in 2015 and would not be having an impact on a current mortgage application. There is something else causing the issue.

On which version(s) of your credit file is the default visible?

  • It looks like the issue was resolved in 2017 so I must have paid something off then. So I think it's going off the 2017 date
  • How do mean version? It was on defaulted payments.

    Equifax, Experian, Call Credit.

    They all contain different data.

Santander uses only Experian, so there's the reason for your decline.

RBS Group uses Equifax, so there's the reason for your NatWest accept.
