Self employed referencing

Hello
My husband and I are looking to move into a new rental property. I am employed and he is self employed. We found somewhere we liked but he failed the referencing as his tax return was for his personal income - the referencing company didn't look at his business account statements as he is able to use the account for his incoming payment once a month plus a number of his outgoings.
He has a bookkeeper but as she isnt a chartered accountant, they didn't take into account her reference either.
I am worried it will happen again so I am asking for help now before we hand over any money for referencing on the new place we have found.
The current agent has told me over the phone it is nothing to worry about but I am concerned that they will look at his personal tax return and not bother to look at his bank statements for his company. I read online that one option would be to put down his company as his employer (which is accurate) but I'm not sure how that would encourage the reference checking company to look at his business rather than his personal assessments.
Any advice would be appreciated!
