Question on payment dates

I'm considering taking a new job and looking through the summary of terms it says that 'salaries are paid monthly on the 17th (or nearest preceding working day)'.

I think it means one of the following 3 options:
  • On the 17th April I will be paid all of April's salary.
  • On the 17th April I will be paid for Salary from 18 March to 17 April
  • Or I will have to wait until 17th May to be paid April's salary.

Which you do you think is most likely?

The reason that this is important is for trying to work out the bets time of the month to start to avoid a cashflow issue.

I will go back to their HR team for calcification but in the meantime was hoping that someone might be able to help here.

The second option is most likely. The third option will usually have an extra disclaimer somewhere saying this is the case. The first option was probably more likely if pay day was closer towards the end of the month, somewhere around the 25th.
  • why not speak to them and ask them to clarify?

if you have the absolute descression to decide a join date, I would recommend joining just after your current pay date (say end of month) to collect a full months salary, then collect two weeks at new employer and then monthly as you say

Just ask, if not in the contract, what the pay period is for the pay day, that is just as critical as the pay day.

Some places go for 3. as that gives time for any extras(overtime, expenses) on the month pay to be processed before the payroll run.

might as well ask about those at the same time.

Thanks for the responses - I will speak to their HR team.

I won't have complete discretion to start as I like I imagine - most likely it will have to be Monday (and possibly the 1st or the 3rd of the month). I will also need to see if I can negotiate myself out of my notice period at my current employers.

It could be any of the options you list, or a combination of 1 and 3. You might have to wait a full month if you start after their salary processing cut off date. I did work at once place where option 1 was used and our payday was the 18th of the month. I would agree that option 2 is probably the more common one, but only HR can tell you the facts, and they may not actually match any of the options outlined.
