Help as company not paying tax...

Hi All,
This is my first post and hoping to get some advice as I am struggling at the moment to know what I can and can't do.
I am a Director and Shareholder and I have just given notice to leave the company and have now been told that I will need to pay my own tax for Tax Year 2018-2019.
Where as I appreciate I am liable to pay tax, the problem is as follows.
By business partner stated that every month my tax will be held back and they will pay it at the end of the financial year, so I don't have to worry, and the 6 years I have worked here, that has been the case as the accountant does my self assessments etc. But now I am leaving, they have said that they are not entitled to pay my tax for the last year.
As they told me it was being held back and that 2018-2019 I have made them money and had amounts held back for tax, surely they should pay this for me? They are stating that they don't have to and it is for me to pay as I have still benefited from having dividends etc. Now I never planned on leaving, something has happened and I can no longer commit to being a Director, so never accounted for this issue.
My question is; can they do this and what can I do to stop this as I am going to be liable for something I will struggle to pay, and if they've been holding it back, then surely this is mine? I just don't know what to do...
Thanks in Advance

Far too confusing.
Have you received a wage?, was that wage gross?
Have you received dividents?0 -
Have you been paid PAYE and been given payslips to prove the deductions? you mention a monthly deduction so you have received a monthly salary?0

Yes, wage received and dividends on top monthly, but the company always 'hold back' an amount to account for upcoming tax payments...
Thank you0 -
It's the tax on Dividends that is the issue. They always hold an amount back, but now I am leaving, they are saying I can't have my tax paid....
Thank you0 -
They always hold an amount back
Who are 'they'?! You were a director and a shareholder! You must have had some say in all this.
Are you still a director?0
