Villas in Malta

Hi everyone,
This is my first post on the site!
Although I've only just registered, I've been using the Forums to search for advice/help for a few weeks now and they are great! You are all so helpful and informative - in fact this is one of the best (if not THE best) forums I've ever used. So thank you xxx
Anyway, back to my query.
We (a family of 5) would like to go on a holiday to Malta next July. I've been researching the different towns/resorts and I quite like the look of the Santa Maria estate in Mellieha. Most of the villas however seem to be for a higher number of people eg 6+, 8+ and there don't seem to be many on the sites I've found that fit our requirements (private pool, bbq, wheelchair friendly, car parking/space). I know my location is quite specific(!) but if anyone knows the area or has any recommendations/advice on sites to find suitable villas I'd be very grateful.
Also, any tips on good/cheapish hire car companies in Malta (specifically estate cars - need to fit luggage and a wheelchair in the car) and flights appreciated too.
Thanks.
Laura
edit: just been having a look through some of the older posts about Malta - some people don't seem to think it's that good??? (or am I wrong?). Any other suggestions for nice villas in Europe? (Went to Lanzarote a few years ago - Playa Blanca).

Mellieha is an area I have spent a week in and to be honest I would not go back. It's north of the island and quite out of it.
Saying that we have had some good holidays in the more central areas. Qwara (central/ coastal) and the Saint Jullians (Beautiful) areas have been a good base for Malta holidays.
You will find Matla is a place people love or hate.
We have either stayed at the qwara palace http://www.qawrapalacemalta.com/
Or we hire an apartment.
Top tip: If you ring maltabargains and they try and get you to stay at the Palm court.. avoid at all costs!!!0
