Liability would stay with you but from my knowledge give a forwarding address abroad and they don’t bother chasing you up for it. When you emigrate just ask the new owner/occupiers to return to sender with new address specified - hope that helps

UPDATE: Popped back into the service station on my way home today; had a nice chat with a store manager 'James' (site manager wasn't around) who seemed to be on my side; he took the PCN numbers from my 'charge' and my contact details and said he'd forward them to the Welcome Break customer service team and see if they could get it overturned. Not a guaranteed 'yes' but far from the "sorry, nowt to do with us guv, external company policy etc..." that I was fully expecting to get....

So I guess we'll see what happens. If I haven't heard anything a few days before the 'due' date maybe I'll call the service station and see if 'James' heard anything back

Trouble is that James is just a pawn in the system.

No, beamerguy, avoid the CEO of WB. Local managers have better results.
PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

Yeah was reading another post about emailing/writing to the CEO earlier today, trouble is most of the reports say they just receive a boilerplate reply saying "we stand by ParkingEye's decision" so I'm like "what's the point?!". Is it still worth messaging in addition to what happened today?

Thanks for this - that's what I was thinking. The guy I spoke to seemed pretty confident his team could have it quashed, tho he obviously didn't promise anything. I'll contact them again in a few weeks and then if nothing else appeal and give my overseas address if they really wanna chase me for £100....!
  • For anyone still reading, this has now been sorted out - charge cancelled!

Went back into the service station, explained situation to manager, told them I would be happy to pay the original parking charge if given chance; he forwarded my details to Welcome Break customer services, they contacted me, said "pay the original £15 fee for staying longer than 2hrs and we'll have ParkingEye cancel the £100 charge". Thought it better to just do that than have it hanging over my head while I'm living abroad...So appealing to them in person does still seem to work, to some degree, even in 2019 👍

Good result. Pragmatism sometimes is the way forward.

BUT - have you had confirmation that WB will be telling PE to cancel the charge?

You really must also get written confirmation from PE that they themselves have cancelled - it is their charge they are pursuing you for. They are generally good at writing to confirm cancellation (7-10 days by letter). You can also check the PE website by going as if to pay the charge and check its current status.

Don't fall asleep on this assuming everything will go as expected.

  • Thanks, yeah good advice. I have had it in writing (email) from WB that they will be getting parking eye to cancel the charge; no idea if parking eye will send a confirmation letter (I assume they will?) But I've now moved out of my house in preparation for leaving the country, so if they want to send me a letter they'd better do it soon for when I go back to check my mail etc.

So do the occasional PE website check to ascertain current status. Don't forget to take with you abroad whatever reference data you need to access your parking charge on their site.
