Cheque made payable to confusion

Bit of background, my father opened a Britannia savings account for me around 15 years ago and last week he requested a cheque be sent to me to close the account. Britannia assured us over the phone that the cheque could be paid into a bank account in either my name or my fathers name. We received the cheque today and it has been made payable to ‘Mr M Evans RE Mr RD Evans”
(Mr M Evans is my dad)

Can this cheque be deposited into my own bank account or will it have to be my fathers? From my knowledge it can’t be but Britannia assured us it can, would anyone with some experience/knowledge clear this up?

Thanks in advanced
Rhys

Does it actually matter, just put it into dads bank, get dad to transfer the money to you, electronically if needs be.
    Thats it, job done.

Or ask at the bank when you take the cheque.....
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

You will be able to pay it into either account although you may find some banks prefer you to pay into your dad's account and then get him to transfer it out to you.

  • I disagree - it has to be paid into an account in the name of Mr M Evans.
Then when cleared the father can transfer the money to the son (if he wants to).

I'd agree that's what the rules will say, but given how little checking there can be on cheque deposits, if it's accepted over the counter for deposit to Mr RD Evans there's a pretty good chance that it'll go through clearing without being questioned.
  • I suppose it will depend on the amount of the cheque - anything over a grand will certainly be checked.
  • There's only one way to find out.

Checked by the teller perhaps, which might also happen with a smaller value, but I don't think there will be any default automated checking, although it might be more likely to trigger a not-so-random check.

Cheques that are paid in into one of those machines that print out a copy for you are certainly checked according to OH.

You are correct. I was trying to pay a cheque into a machine at Barclays last week. The value of the cheque was £73, but the machine kept reading it as £273. After several attempts I called over one of those iPads with legs and it took to a human to be processed. The human informed me that they are, indeed, checked at the end of the day.
