Fractured Skull & Car Insurance

Partner recently assaulted resulting in fractured skull and craniotomy. DVLA have been notified but medical reports still awaited for decision on how long driving licence will be suspended. In the interim partner is a named car driver on fully comprehensive car insurance due for renewal in next few weeks. Not sure if best to take partner off insurance policy or will they renew with him on it as named driver (at an exorbitant rate) even although his licence is being suspended for minimum of 6 months-2 years until medically fit to drive? Not sure best way to handle this - any advise gratefully received.

Sorry about your partner's injury and the loss of his driving privileges. That is a double-whammy.

Your insurance company will be able to confirm if they will allow him to be a named driver while he cannot drive; a quick call to Customer Services should answer this question (or use their wbechat if they have one). Depending on his driving record, leaving him on a named driver might continue to reduce your premium. (When I add my partner as a named driver, my premium went down by £17 per year).

I don't see why they should load the premium because he can't drive. He knows he can't drive and won't do so until he gets his license back. But I don't know whether the insurance company will see it this way as I have no experience of this. Hopefully someone will be along to help further.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.
  • Thank you - I hadn't thought about using webchat - great idea.
