Economy Energy now hounding me with £300+ direct debits from (now expired) Direct Saver (Fixed) term

Was on thier Direct Saver (Fixed) v1.0 tariff from 08/10/17 to 19/09/18 during which time they had direct debits set at £17 (gas) £40 (electric) then changed to a whopping £302 (gas) on 10/09/18 and have been taking said amount ever since.

Now on thier Evergreen Direct Saver since tariff end date. When queried with them on live chat why the hell they let a debt accrue the account when THEY set the direct debit amount and only changed it towards the end of the tarriff they just say the change was due to a debt accruing but take no ownership of the issue that THEY set it up in the first place.

They say they sent a change notification by email but this was never received.

What can I do as this is ridiculous. I'm not arguing my usage as I sent them readings, my issues are with thier management of the direct debit, them allowing a debt to accrue and them not taking ownership of the issue.

I have thier customer complaints email but have zero confide that anyone will do anything.

To rub salt in I've recieved a projection from them; £897 electric and £1198 gas - here's the punchline; for a 2 bedroom bungalow insulated to the hilt...

Thoughts, insight, help?

My main insight would be that you did not check your bills or statements to see if your readings were being used - how often did you send them in?

£17 a month is unfeasibly low, leccy looks about right dpending on what you actually use.

If you dont monitor your own readings and check that bills are correct and that you are actually pay enough then a lot of it is down to you. I agree that they shouldn't have allowed you to run up a deficit of that size but you also have a responsibilty to make sure that your bills are right and getting them corrected if they aren't. Never accept an estimated bill - get it corrected immediately.

Do your own sums, check how much you've used and how much you've paid. Dont forget that if you've ramped up a large debit that you'll have to pay it off as well as paying for what you are currently using so your direct debit will be at least double what it would be if you hadn't got a debit to pay down.

A projection in £££'s is meaningless, you need to look at your consumption in kwh. The fact that it's only a little flat is also meaningless if you dont use your energy efficiently.
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers

As above. Monthly readings at a minimum. Most cases on here are through people not giving regular readings.

You mention about them not taking ownership. I take it you check your bank statements, credit card statements, phone bills and such - to make sure that all is in order. So why not your energy bills?
