Direct Line NCD

New to these boards so apols if this has been discussed elsewhere. About 10 years ago I added my (18-year-old) daughter to my Direct Line car insurance as they offered no-claims discount (NCD) to all drivers on the policy. This seemed a good way for my daughter to accumulate NCD, but has cost me hundreds, if not thousands, of pounds in additional payments. Now she has her own car and has been insured with Direct Line for the first year. She has received her renewal notification, & has only been credited with one year's NCD. Direct Line says this is correct, and that I hadn't actually been paying the extra premiums for my daughter's NCD. This seems like blatant mis-selling as I understood I was paying extra for my daughter so she would accumulate her own NCD. Has anyone else had this? Is there anything I can do about it? Many thanks.

Do you have the relevant documentation to back up your case stating that your daughter would indeed accumulate her own NCD?

As I understand it, it is not a no claims discount in the normal sense. All it does is give a discount in the first year if they insure in their own name with DL.

Thisis my understanding after a quick google and reading other peoples similar problems.

Go to https://www.directline.com/faqs and enter Named Driver Discount (choose Car Insurance in the drop down) in the Search and you'll get a FAQ entitled "What is a Named Driver No-claim Discount?" All is explained there.

How long was it between your daughter coming off your insurance and getting a policy of her own with DL?
  • There was no gap, my daughter was insured on my policy up to the point when she took out her own DL insurance. I discussed this with DL to make sure we met the "rules" before confirming. I'll check out the link, thank you.
  • Having looked at the policy renewal document again, it does state that named driver no-claims discount is included, although it doesn't say what effect this has had on the quote. I thought I was helping my daughter accumulate no-claims discount of her own, but it appears I have misunderstood. I wonder how many others have been caught out by this? Thanks again, your replies have been very helpful.
