Link debt collecting

in Credit cards
My Mum got in a mess with her credit card that was with MBNA. She no longer has a card and is not charged interest. The debt has been taken over by a company called Link.
I was disgusted when I saw how much she had been allowed to spend on her card, it was over £5000. It is now below £4000. Mum is 82 and was diagnosed with Vascular Dementia in 2015. I'm her carer and was helping her out with the £50 a month payment. However, I've had to stop work to look after her full time.
Can I just stop paying the loan back because I don't it was right to let her build up such a large debt, aren't they suppose to do "responsible lending"

A debt can be written off if the collector is satisfied that there is little chance of collection.
I would write to Link, using the information in the National Debtline article https://www.nationaldebtline.org/EW/factsheets/Pages/write-off-debt/write-off.aspx
The article includes letter templateI work within the voluntary sector, supporting vulnerable people to rebuild their lives.

No. You can't just choose when something is irresponsible lending.
If you have a complaint, she (or you with POA) need to submit it to them. They may show some goodwill.
But it's not a ridiculous amount and it's unlikely she informed them of her condition upon application0
