Renal haemodialysis

Hello, is there a waiting list for renal patients before they can start dialysis (due to too many patients and few facilities) and if yes, how long is approximately?
Thanks

    If acutely unwell- no

    If chronic kidney disease- probably

Varies by area. Ask your consultant.
  • If you need dialysis urgently, then no. If you've got gradually declining kidney function, then it depends on various factors like how quickly it's worsening, your symptoms, etc. Then there's things like access - usually a forearm fistula needs created with a short operation, which then takes time to mature into a usable one. Dialysing through plastic lines isn't ideal and is reserved for emergencies.
