Hi, my partner want to divorce her ex and do it herself to save a few pounds as she has been told that it is easy! She has been separated nearly 7 years so she knows she doesn't need his consent but what she is unsure of is if she needs to serve him with the papers or not as she has been told both things. I have looked and I am also unsure. She knows where he moved to when they split up but due to him being a violent control freak she has had nothing to do with him. What is the best option in this case please? Thanks in advance.

She won't need his consent as they have been separated for more than 5 years. She can complete and submit the petition online via the gov.uk site. She will need her marriage certificate, if she does t have it she will have to buy an official copy.

Does she know his address? She will need it for the petition to be served on him. If she doesn't then she will need to try to locate him - or use the services of a location agent to try to find him.

If she does it herself there will only be the court fee to pay which is £550.

Thanks for the reply. She only knows that he moved in to his dads when they split up but she isn't sure if that's his current address. He never registered on the electoral role or anything. Would this address do or does she need to check it's his current address somehow?

It's worth trying to establish if he or his father still live there first.

Thank you, we will find out. Hopefully he still does but how far do you have to go to locate him if he no longer lives at that address?
