My gas and Electric tariff is due to end Aug 31st 18

im on BIue+Price Protection Aug18v2

EDF may not be the cheapest etc but been with them since 2006 and never had a problem thru several properties,

so looked into changing tarriffs and they do one called
Connect+Control2 Sep20

i get prices rise etc, but what i dont get is despite every standing charge and unit rate they state, the new tariff is dearer in every way,

again i get it, but then when it gives my personal projections it states i will save more that does not make sense !!

also anyone on this/gone to this tariff care to advise if its a good tarriff and are the extras any good ?

BIue+Price Protection Aug18v2:

Electricity
Yearly personal projection £625.97
Daily standing charge 18.90p per day
Unit rate 14.96p per kWh

Gas
Yearly personal projection £441.74
Daily standing charge 26.25p per day
Unit rate 3.338p per kWh
This tariff

Connect+Control2 Sep20:

Electricity
Yearly personal projection £613.73

Daily standing charge 22.05p per day
Unit rate 17.15p per kWh
Gas
Yearly personal projection £425.75
Daily standing charge 31.50p per day
Unit rate 3.698p per kWh

As often reported here, suppliers are required under the terms of their Supply Licences to use a rolling 12 months cost projection. For consumers on fixed term tariffs with less than 12 months to run, this leads to artificially inflated cost projections which can produce a saving even when the tariff on offer costs more.

For example, with one month left to run on a fixed tariff, the new annual cost is one month on the fixed tariff PLUS 11 months on the supplier's SVT.

Ofgem's methodology works for the 70% of consumers who are still on their supplier's SVT.

My advice: ignore what it says on your statement. Go to any comparison website and enter your projected annual consumption in kWhs/year. This will give you a list of suppliers and tariffs with the cheapest first.

As far as price increases are concerned: suppliers can set any standing charge and unit price that they wish. What matters to most people is the total annual cost.

WOW! Why are you paying such high prices for gas & electric? Is it just because you have been a loyal customer for a number of years?

Check out Octopus for Electric & Zog for Gas. Both have excellent customer srvice and their unit prices & standing charges are much lower (depending on your region).

Now I feel ripped off :rotfl:

No it’s just that you hear all these stories of these upstart gas and electric companies ripping people off, charging when they shouldn’t and never answering the phone ,

I consider myself quite savvy when it comes to shopping for better deals, but with utilities it’s not just as easy as moving to another company in a day if you change tour mind is it,

But if your singing the praises of Octopus for Electric & Zog for Gas then I will check them out

I, too feel uncomfortable about switching. Having read horror stories and being pensioners. I have done some research and will be switching from EDF fixed tariff ending in August to Octopus 12 months fixed tariffs. Bulb seems good as well but tariffs variable.

From one senior citizen to another, you will not have any problems with Octopus. They are rated by Which and they will keep you informed throughout the process. All you need to do is tell them two things: one, your estimated annual usage in kWhs/year and your postcode and, two, your Direct Debit Bank details. They will give you a transfer date and 5 days before they will ask you for meter readings. Octopus will manage everything and via e-mail they will keep you updated on how the transfer is going. There is no need to tell your existing supplier that you are switching: this only complicates things. Octopus will have your meter readings validated and these will be used to open and close your accounts. Your old supplier will send you a Final Bill within 6 weeks of the transfer.

I am with Octopus for electricity. I enter an actual meter reading on the Octopus App once a month and get a statement of account back in a couple of hours showing my charges and debit/credit balance. Octopus are currently managing a switch for me as we are moving home next week.
