So as you will see from my badges etc. There was a time (2 years ago) I was debt free.
Despite that number on all of my CC statements, loans etc reaching 0. It turns out I didn't really deal with the fact that I am crap with money at all.
I've lived in a bit of a bubble for two years. So much has changed since I was debt free. We bought our first house then 3 days after getting the keys I lost my Dad to a short but fierce battle with pancreatic cancer. I got a new job - well a new career really which has been very tough. It's been an emotional roller coaster with most of that time being blighted by highs and incredible lows. I'm not ashamed to say I felt suicidal at points.
Within this time my debt has mounted and mounted and is now at an eye watering figure. Not even had the balls to tot it up yet.
I know something needs to change. I just need to stop living beyond my means. We are saving to get married next year and are hoping to start a family after that. I need to get rid of the majority of this debt and get whatever is left at 0% if I'm to even contemplate maternity.

So sorry to hear about your Dad. That must've been a very difficult time.
I want to wish you the very best of luck as you look to the future.
I'm also getting married next year (and hoping for babies shortly after) but like you, I know I can't have those things without getting my finances under control. Once you do the maths and know what mountain you have to climb, you can take the first step to tackling it.
I realized this about 12 months ago and I've come a long way in that time - I know you can too!

Thank you so much for the words of encouragement SaF.
You're completely right. I'm off to look and see where I am at.

So here goes ...
Overdraft £500.00
CC1 - £3618.83
CC2 - £4502.03
Loan - £5709.08
Total - £14329.94
I can't believe I've let myself get into this situation. I'm so stupid. The loan was for a car so I don't feel too badly about that but over £8k with nothing to really show for it over two years. That's an average overspend of £333.33 a month. What the hell!!!0 -
Sorry to hear about to your father
I've been there too, cleared all my debt then took my eye off the ball and built up £16k worth woth nothing to show for it.
Feels horrible but I'm trying not to get hung up on the mistakes made but to learn and look forward.[STRIKE]18/06/18 - £16,189.29
18/07/18 - £15,384.34[/STRIKE]
22/12/19 - £11,209.950 -
Thanks Jon, I'm sorry we've both got ourselves into this situation again after being debt free but It's comforting to know I'm not the only one.
Yep, feeling sorry for myself isn't going to make it any better with the way I emotionally spend it will probably make it worse.
I need to learn how to manage my money better and stick to a budget.0 -
So I've worked out a rough budget.
I've decided to set up a standing order of £30 per week to go into my Monzo account.
I need to address the overdraft first. This is currently fee free but is tied to an account that I pay for and the benefits really aren't worth the £15 monthly payment. If I get rid of this and switch my account to a normal one that's £15 I'll save each month.
If I stick to my budget I should have an additional £200 pay off my overdraft at the end of the month.
Time to have a clear out I think to try and raise the additional £300.0 -
That's a fantastic start. I'm terrible at having a clear out - I am far too sentimental!
I hope you find a few gems to sell that will get you closer to your goal.0 -
So a little update on me. I've managed to find a few bits to sell but not got round to listing yet.
I'm applying for another job but my CV needs a serious uplift so have spent the last few evenings doing that.
I haven't gone over my budget of £30 per week on my Monzo card.
I was due to go out this weekend but have said no as I know it will be an expensive night out. I don't really want to spend that cash at the moment.
Still hoping to be able to clear another good chunk off the debt at the end of the month.0 -
Hi - just checking as you haven't posted in a while?
How did you get on with selling stuff and job applications?
Hope all is well,
SaF x0
