Attendanmce Allowance: Hospital AND Care Home Stay

Hi

My mum receives Attendance Allowance and is currently in hospital, and is potentially going to also have to stay in a Care Home to recover.

The information I've found about Attendance Allowances says that if you go into hospital it is suspended after 28 days. And it also states that if you go into a Care Home it is suspended after 28 days (unless you pay for the care yourself). However, I can't find any information about whether these two things are considered separate or combined should you have to stay in both a Hospital AND a Care Home.

i.e. If my Mum stays in Hospital for 2 weeks, and then in a Care Home for 3 weeks, will she get AA the whole time because they are considered separate, or would she get 4 weeks of AA but not the 5th, because they are combined?

Can anyone confirm how this situation would be handled? Thanks!

Any stays in hospital or a care home separated by 28 days or less are added together when working out when Attendance Allowance should stop.

So if she's going straight from hospital to the care home it would stop 28 days after she was admitted to hospital. I take it she's not self funding?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

    Thanks for the confirmation. :)

I don't know about the self funding side of things. We have been given a lot of mixed messages about what is going to be done (she will need op and care, she won't need op, etc.), and as she is being treated as a pretty low priority little further information has been forthcoming. If my understanding is correct, if it is in any way paid for by the NHS then the 28 day AA rule applies, and if it is self funded then the 28 day rule doesn't apply and she can continue to receive AA?

Its worth notifiyng the DWP as soon as possible as those £85 a week can soon add up leaving you with a big repayment.

Of bigger concern will be who is going to pay for her in the care home - and whether she will get NHS continuing care funding. That is a whole different minefield!
