Bank fraud attempt

I had a text from Barclays in the week, it came through from the number that Barclays have texted me before on.
It said at transaction had been referred to the fraud department and please call this number.
So I did and I got through to the fraud department who said they hadn't sent the message and to ignore it, they asked what number I had called on and said it wasn't a Barclays number and that was the end of it.

In hindsight it was a scam and the only way I can see it working is,
You dial the fake number, that number routes to Barclays where they hope you put all your security details in as you go through the genuine call centre.
They record everything you say and phone inputs etc and bingo they have your entire log in and security details.

Yet Barclays didn't care less.

Have heard of something similar - the advice was not to ring any number given in a text message (as fraudsters can make it look as if it is coming from a genuine bank number when it isn't) but instead dial the number on the back of your debit card

I doubt it would route through to Barclays. Why bother with the hassle when they can just answer the phone themselves on their fake number and ask you the security questions?

It's just a variation on the 'clicking a link in an email' scam and entering your details. Nothing groundbreaking like listening in to your calls.
