Council tax and housing benefit discount and reduction

Hi all

I am currently claiming e s a ( support group) as I have sever anxiety I am currently entitled to full housing benefit and owe nothing on my council tax bill. My son who is currently living away is considering coming back home, if this happens he will be looking for work, would my benefits be affected if he moves back home even if he is not working and not paying board . ? Many thanks

    1. Do you claim PIP/DLA - if so which components?
If you claim PIP daily living or DLA - mid/high rate care then there will be no non dependents deductions made to your HB.

    2. Will your son be claiming any benefits?

You can check about non dependents deductions for HB and Council Tax Reduction on your local council website - google the name of your council + Housing benefit and council tax reduction.

If your son is entitled to a benefit then there may be a non dependent deduction to your HB /CTR. On what basis do you get full council tax reduction?

Your ESA will not be affected unless you are receiving the severe disability element with your ESA. This will stop if your son is over 18 and moves back in with you as he is counted as your non dependent.

It does not matter whether he is paying you 'board'. If he is your non dependent then he is assumed to be paying you either from earnings/benefits/savings.
  • Hi
Thanks for your reply , I am not familiar with benefits what is pip and delay. I get maximum housing benefit and my e s a has been increased to £127.15 a week. That!!!8217;s all I receive in benefit.

My son would probably go back to his previous job for about 10 hours whilst he secures a full time job

I get council tax reduction as I am a single mum my daughter is also at university, when I first received benefits I was paying around £40 per month but was told I had now overpaid and received a rebate with o more payments due.

    Thanks for your help

PIP has replaced DLA and they are both a disability benefit. As you're not receiving either of these, then you'll need to look at your local councils website for non dependent deductions, if your son comes to live with you. Him returning home could affect the amount of housing benefit and council tax reduction you can claim.
