20GBP fees for recieving CHAPS payment

My dad sent me GBP 4,800 from abroad using wired transfer which was credited to my current account yesterday, however i noticed it was GBP 20 less than the credit note given to my dad and the money transfer company (western union) is telling us it was charged by the beneficiary bank (Santander - my UK current account provider). This is the first time i heard about charges for receiving payment, any idea if that's true?

CHAPS charges vary by bank between £20 and £30 and most, if not all, banks make a charge but that is usually for sending payment rather than receiving. Are you sure it's not a currency conversion charge or something similar?

What have Santander said to you about it?

Edit: their FAQ page says they don't charge for receiving international transfers or CHAPS payments.

It's not a CHAPS payment if it's sent from abroad as CHAPS is an internal UK system. Many banks (although not all) charge something for receiving a foreign payment.

It was CHAPS as i can see that on the santander letter. Santander told me they never take any charges for receiving payment, apparently the payment came from Bank of America in the UK and looks like they have taken 20GBP off from the transaction without my consent. I have to dispute this with western union now as we were not advised about this charge before initiating the payment. Watch out these dodgy money transfer companies for hidden charges!

If your father agreed to pay ALL charges then you should have received all of the money.
If he only agreed to pay his own bank's costs then you will have to suck it up as agents banks are involved - they all need to earn a crisp you know to pay out these PPI refunds LOL

Western Union took a charge to make the CHAPS payment. They then issued a payment instruction to their UK correspondent. This bank will have levied a charge (£20). Depending on the message that they received from Western Union they will either deduct the amount from the sum forwarded or debit the originating bank an additional £20.

In this case they have clearly deducted the fee and paid the remainder. Whether you have cause for complaint would depend on the agreement between your father and Western Union at the time that the payment instruction was made.
