Delaying my DMP

Options
was due to start a DMP with Stepchange in January but due to unforeseen circumstances, I asked them if I could push it back til around March/April time.

Since then, I bit the bullet at work and asked for a transfer outside of London. This means lower living costs, the potential to bring my DFD closer when I actually start paying and from a purely selfish perspective, a sense of ease of how I’ll cope with the repayments (I have no support system here in London).

All great, BUT my tenancy expires in June and I can’t move with work until mid July so will need temporary housing. I have no real idea what this will cost and I’m worried that if I start paying my DMP now, I’ll end up without enough money to live off.

Don’t get me wrong - I won’t be looking for a palace. A box room that is reasonable commuting distance from work is all I need, but this is London ££££.

Do you think there’s a way I could hold off on the DMP until August? Or maybe ask if it’s possible to significantly reduce the originally agreed payment? Or this totally unreasonable?

I know that in the short term, this is bad for my DFD but I honestly believe that leaving London will be a positive step to clearing this debt.

Thank you in advance for any info or suggestions.

Have you served notice to end the tenancy in June or do you mean that the fixed term ends in June?

    The tenancy itself expires then.
The landlord has said nothing so it might roll over which would be great. However, the other tenants are wanting to leave.

No, the tenancy does not expire. The fixed term might end but a perfectly legal tenancy will still exist.

It doesn't matter what the landlord might say or might not say. The day after the fixed term ends you will automatically start either a contractual or statutory periodic tenancy.

Forgot to mention that I!!!8217;m also looking at shared hostel rooms as that will avoid having to pay any real deposit upfront but then I!!!8217;d possibly require storage etc. I!!!8217;ve lived in a hostel briefly before so I can manage it but the availability is an issue.

Thanks, I’ve started to read through this. I’ll also speak with the other tenants and see if they’ve got any clearer ideas of what they are doing. One of them I know is leaving on June 8th.
