Insurance Policy Expired, though Broker says valid

I took out an insurance policy a couple years ago through a recognised broker. Don't think type of insurance is relevant to this post.
Confirmed with Broker in December that it had been renewed and got confirmation by email, with start date etc. Broker has continued to take premiums monthly.
Now time to claim, and broker passes me to insurers claim line, who tell me that policy has expired last year.
Broker is now in "negotiations" with insurer, but I need to put my claim in.

Time to talk to lawyer? I'm not going to sit around waiting for them to battle it out.

    You shouldn't need to go down that route just yet. Give them a reasonable about of time to resolve it. If you have proof (as you say) you intended to renew, have paid premiums and the broker simply hasn't hit the renew button it should be a simple case of reinstating your policy and dealing with the claim.
    If for any reason the insurer declines to the brokers professional indemnity insurance should pick it up but Id doubt it will come to that.

    I think thats exactly what it has come to now as far as I understand. The broker has made no headway with the insurer and has asked me to contact the Financial Ombudsman.

    Ombudsman has asked me to get letters of Final Response from both parties and raise formal complaints.

    On requesting from the insurer, they have said that they will now honour a claim for one month of income protection only (when the policy should cover 12 months), so thats obviously no good. Am getting to talk to one of their managers tomorrow so will get the final response letter set up then.

    Just to hope for a slick and speedy resolution now. I'll expect progress to be made daily.
