British Gas Tariff

It I wish to stay with British Gas and move to a cheaper tariif, I see that I have to accept the following conditions :-
Everything Online Jan 2019
Fixed price energy until 31st January 2019
Manage your account totally online & stay in control with no surprises
To be eligible for this tariff you’ll need to book a smart meter upgrade appointment by 31st July 2018 if we're able to install them at your home
Pay by Direct Debit (either fixed or variable payments)
You’ll need to sign up to British Gas Rewards as soon as you’ve set up your online account
Exit fees of £30 per fuel
To get the lower tariff I am forced to have a smart meter, (which I have no desire to have) I did not think you could be made to have one until at lest 2020.

You are not being made to have one, you can go for a different tariff or supplier.

It's a meter - if you don't as a matter of your principles you don't want one installed, look elsewhere
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

As others have said, you have a choice to go to a supplier that doesn't support smart meters yet or you can go onto a tariff that doesn't require one.

The supplier can encourage you to have a smart meter by offering a reduced tariff or even charging you extra for not having one, it's your choice.

The legislation does not demand that you have one but the supplier is at liberty to provide which ever meter he wants.
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers

Scottish gas "made" me get a smart meter installed then I moved to Bulb.

Now it is a dumb meter :rotfl: and I have to read it every month and send the readings to Bulb.

Its very unlikely that BG s meter fitters will get round to fitting the smart meters in the whole of 2018 anyway. You will be long gone to another supplier 11 months after you switch most likely.
Like all smart meter fitting teams they will be working extremely slowly.
BG took around 4 attempts to catch me in when they fitted smart meters to my last property because they would not work later in the day after 5 pm to catch me at home.
If someone knocks to fit a meter, smart or dumb, and no one answers the door, they simply try again several months later, etc etc .
Go for that smart meter tariff..It will be fine for a year.
Unless the government changes the criteria and makes them mandatory, which they obviously will have to do or its all a waste of time and many billions
