Claiming Against Travel Insurance Company

Too cut a long story short; taken quite ill in South Africa about 2 months ago and stayed overnight in hospital. Put claim in for cancellation of Safari and for flights unused.

Received a letter this morning just paying out the medical fees that I paid and stating that "curtailment is return home early to your country of residence". We were told not to fly until a doctor and oxygen was available to accompany me home and this came from the assistance service through the insurance company. Unfortunately we left SA 2 days after we should have originally left.

They are shut for the weekend but have taken the letter to say that they will not pay out due to the fact we arrived home later than our original planned date. This was the case but was not our fault. We are severely out of pocket at the moment and I am thinking that they left us there so they new that they would not have to pay out if we got home a day or two later.

Has anyone else had any experience of this. Insurance is with Club Direct.

They are correct, curtailment does mean having to cut short the holiday.

Is there anything else in your policy that may cover cancellation of trips?

Did you contact the insurers while you were out there to tell them what was happening?

    Hope you are better x
    Gone ... or have I?
  • Yes in full contact with the assistance service as soon as it happened. We would have travelled home within a week but they told us if we caught the plane on our home without a doctor that they said we had to have then if the plane would have diverted I would have been liable for any costs. We were only carrying out the instructions given to us by them.

Hopefully Monday will bring better news.

Am fine now but on Epileptic tablets for the rest of my life.
