  • I find that saying "Look, I understand you are doing your job, but I don't want to waste your time - I entered the competition, but am not in a position to buy your product/take out your subscription/sponsor your aunt etc." is generally the quickest and easiest route to ending the call.

It's worth remembering that the folks calling aren't (usually) part of some evil cabal, but are normally just doing their job and must get a tonne of abuse on a daily basis.

Politeness and kindness is always the best way (unless they are rude and/or scammers, in which case they deserve both barrels).

My youngest son works for EDF he used to cold call for business for them and told me it was the worst job ever, he was called ever "f" "p" and "b" MANY times a day.
This is total strangers calling a young man disgusting names, at the end of the day he is doing a job to pay his bills keep his car running and to have a bit of a social life. :(

Now he works in debt recovery where people have to ring him to sort out their bills and he is still abused daily, so even now he takes chit from folks because they didn't pay their bill

I couldn't do it because if a customer was screaming at me I would tell them to do one and I would get sacked. :o

Although I would never swear or scream at a cold caller I have learnt to cut them short and just say "I am sorry I am not interested" then just put the phone down.

So please be polite but firm with cold callers it is someone just doing their job. :)

Agree on that to the cold callers ; a polite no thank you is for the best. I do like to have a bit of fun with Microsoft support though.

I agree too with not being rude - I just make silly excuses like I'm having my tea, there is someone at the door or I have visitors..... and if they go on to ask when they could call me back, I usually tell them that I am not interested so please don't.

My sister says if she gets cold callers she just puts the phone down but doesn't cut them off so they ramble on away to themselves for ages untl they realise no one is listening!
:TA big thanks to all who post and sprinkling lucky dust to all who enter :smileyhea

For me it depends on the type of cold call. If its from a comp I entered and its someone just trying to sell me something I politely decline and tell them I only entered to win the competition because i'm too broke to buy things :rotfl:

If it's a cold call like "we've been informed you've been in a car accident" they get told to **** off because they haven't been informed about anything and its an outright lie. I'm polite to the marketing people because they're not lying, they're just trying to sell me stuff.
