I know I said I wouldn't post on this thread again but after just reading the last post I had to- my husband has cancer - he was diagnosed approx 3 months ago - though not the same as PPI - we had mortgage cover from an seperate "arm" of the mortgage company in the event of long term illness, included in the policy document is cancer, either terminal or not. Will they pay out - pay our mortgage because my husband cannot work - will they hell  So no, I have no problem with people not paying their debts by whatever means they choose and if it wasn't for the sake of my children we would declare ourselves bankrupt because we would refuse to let them win.

As it is I have a wonderful Dad.

So, I would like to know where the £39.44 we have been paying every month for the last 10 years has been going ????

This site changes lives. Its that simple. Debt and the fear, shame, pressure -whatever you may want to call it drags people down and colours their whole existance. COmming on here makes you reailise that you are not alone, people actully CARE, if you have debt it dosen't make you a "bad" person or a worthless human being. When I first came on here I was a total wreck, my health was seriously suffering, I was losing my hair having horrendious skin problems to name just a couple of the "fun" things, and yes I was seriously thinking that perhaps it was not worth carrying on with life. Then I found this site. I have made so many friends(both real and cyber) on here, I hope that I have helped sone in a similar situation as well. I still have some debt but things have changed so much, DH is still not in the best of health our house is STILL faling to bits BUT........ things ARE different THAT is PRICELESS. This site makes you reailise exactly what matters. Money is NOT everything. At the moment my nephew is facing up to his terminal cancer all the money in the world won't change that. SO the point of this site is help, advice, love , friendship, support and knowing that you are not alone.

Very true we had payment protection with liverpool victoria card and they paid out NOTHING NOT ONE BLOODY PENNY. Yet for years we paid extra each month, they are our biggest creditor at £6,000. Money we shouldn't owe them is making up half our debt.:mad::mad:

    Hi

Sorry there was no judgemental undertones meant from myself, I was just starting to think along these lines because of the recent media/Martin interest in the PPI claims. What I was really meaning to ask is why there is a degree of contradiction on the site re: cancelling PPI so that there is no protection on a loan, which may lead to unmanageable debt, which then may lead to bankruptcy.

I don't think the whole point of it is to stop people taking out PPI - I think the MSE point of view (correct me if I'm wrong) is to make sure that people check they're eligible for it before wasting thousands on something that's no use for them, and to make sure they're getting the best value for money as many people don't realise they have a choice of providers.

The reclaiming bit is for people who have already taken it out, but were mis-sold it for various reasons, it isn't just a mass protest to try and get free money from companies.

It's not really a contradiction at all - the site's all about learning to manage your money effectively and getting the best value for it. Reclaiming PPI was/is all about getting a refund for a mis-sold product (as was the case in rayday's post above).

I'm sure Martin would agree that a reasonably priced policy which actually did what it was purported to do would be worthwhile. I used to work for a well known mail order catalogue company and it was no internal secret that the company was making a slight loss on actually selling goods - it was PPI, extended warranties and other financial services where the profit was made.

A PPI policy that only pays out once you've been unemployed 6 months is neither use nor ornament - who can afford to be out of work unexpectedly for that long?

The point is to help people make informed decisions and to take responsibility for their finances and show them how to do it. Just because I don't necessarily agree with bankruptcy doesn't mean that I will look down on people that choose this option. Who knows I may be unlucky enough to find myself in that position one day through no fault of my own and would not want people to judge me but to offer help and support and what is undoubtably a very stressful and traumatic time. And who on here can claim never to have made a mistake - should people be blamed for making mistakes or should we help and support people as best we can and hope that people treat us with the same kindness and respect. If just one person is given hope and the ability to deal with whatever situation they find themselves in then it's worthwhile.

I think different people get different things from moneysavingexpert: hope, friendship, information, a feeling of wellbeing from helping people, a sense of perspective on life etc. I think people take what they want from this site and that's the beauty of it.

I don't really see what you are asking?...but this site is to help the consumers not to be fooled by the big businesses(that we all used to trust)...to find the best possible prices for everything...
The point of this site is very widespread from debtbusting...to share investing and everything in between...there are loads of friendly people on here who all can help when needed...wheteher it be a shoulder to cry on or something to celebrate...
People face debt for all sorts of reasons...change of circumstances...
For instance when looking at my sig...you'd think that I had been irresponsible..but..the truth is my business was going under so having an excellent credit rating(never missed a payment in my life)..decided to take personal loans out to stack up the business and changed cab companies...rather than bankruptcy...personally I didn't want to go down any of the payplan/bankruptcy routes as I wanted to pay my debt back and knew that I would be able to but others have siyuations where it's impossible to pay back...at the end of the day we shouldn't judge anybody until we have walked in their shoes!!!!
there is always support for anyone whatever their problems are..so theres plenty of point with this site!!!!!
