British gas debt confusion.
Hello!
I recently checked my credit file and saw old debts to British Gas from 2014. When I left British gas I was £7 in credit, but these bills are pretty steep- £261 for electric and £195 for gas. I rang British gas to see if I could get a break down of what these charges are and to set up a payment plan if they made sense. However, they had no record of the debt on file. They couldn't find it with my name, address or birthday. I even gave them the dates i used them and still nothing.
Could this be a fault on my credit file? or does this happen if they've passed on the debt to a collection company? I don't want to jump for joy too soon.
Thanks :rotfl:

The energy companies, and BG in particular, are generally incompetent and tend to lose information on debts once passed on to collection agencies. I would be tempted to raise a complaint to the CRA that they are showing an entry that BG cannot substantiate. BG may then come back to you once poked by them. Are you at the same address ?0

Yeah Iv'e been looking at other people who have had problems with them. No I am at a different address but before I left British Gas I gave them my new address details to send the final bill to- but if they've lost the debt info they've probably lost the address info too!0
