My inlaws, who are in their 70's, have today showed me their gas and electric bill - it does seem a lot!

They are with SSE and have been for many years - they don't shop around etc and leave it to me to sort sky, insurances etc - but with utilities i am a bit lost myself!

They are on the energyplus Argos standard for gas and electric:

gas:

3.94p per kWh with a 16.45 per day standing charge.

Annual consumption was 7903 kWh.

They pay £34 per month and estimate a £371 bill in the next 12 months and are currently £204 in credit.

electric:

15.98p per kWh with a 16.45 per day standing charge.

Annual consumption was 3940 kWh.

They pay £53 per month and estimate a £689 bill in the next 12 months and are currently £266 in credit.

They are 2 x pensioners living in a 2 bed bungalow and are paying £86 per month - we are in a 4 bed detached and pay £96 per month!

I appreciate that they are in the house most days hence more heating etc, but any advice on best way forward to get a better deal or do these figures sound about right?

Thanks!

Have you tried putting the figures into the MSE comparison Cheap Energy Club?

    What was the result?

Sometimes dual fuel is not always cheaper these days

You will also have to consider how your in laws would work with any new supplier, submit monthly reading online for instance?

Cheaper may not be easier for the in laws, only you & they will know the answer to that

Make sure you put in the actual annual consumption in kWh - you need 2 ACTUAL readings about 12 months apart - not what their existing DD might be a month.

I've swopped my MIL several times - my reward a bottle of scotch. I do all her meter readings online. The issue I have with her is ensuring she keeps the heating on - thats what she gets the heating allowance for.

What about yourself ? - what savings could you make ?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

    That's not a lot

I'm in my 70's and live in a 3 bed house and my annual gas is 13500 kWh and electricity 3900 kWh and after switching my DD is £88 a month.
over 73 but not over the hill.
