Tax credit Overpayment

I received a letter today requesting £1017.76.
I last claimed tax credits in 2008. I have no explaination of this overpayent and it was 10 years ago.
I vaguely recall receiving a letter last year stating that the case was closed but i cannot find it.
How do i appeal this and get more information from HMRC. Surely i am not expected to pay this after 10 years?!
The debt was apparently passed to a debt collection agency- Rossendales, but i have a letter from them stating the account has been closed on their system.

please help...

  • Call them and ask them what the reason was. It’s highly likely you would have had at least one notification at the time so therefore are too late for any appeal/dispute options.
