Last year I bought 4 massive pumpkins on Nov 1st as they were 10p each. When I researched online the advice was not to leave them for small birds,
Any idea why?
I was thinking to roast them as we spend a massive amount on bird food!.
Meg.

Small birds have small beaks... Pumpkin seeds are quite large...

If you want to feed small birds, you need small seeds.

The seeds were roasted, and chopped to the size of rice.
The articles seemed to suggest that the seeds were bad for them.

Please post a link to that advice. Normally seed-eating birds will discard the husk of the seed and for a soft seed like a pumpkin it may be that roasting makes them easier to shell, for birds big enough to handle them.

I wonder if the suggestion is that roasted and ground seeds leave sharp-edged fragments of shell that risk catching on the narrower gullet and crop of a small bird?

Pumpkin seeds are meant to be a good source of zinc, so perhaps if small birds were to gorge themselves then they could take in too much, but that seems a bit of a long-shot.

I buy pumpkin seeds for the birds.

I also leave out melon seeds and butternut squash seeds which the birds wolf down.

Can I ask if you just wash them and put them out raw? I have often wondered if I could use them like this or put in compost bin? Thanks.

Hopefully, he didn't do a Pooh Bear eating honey at Rabbit's House afterwards :D
