Can't afford heating

I had to give up work last winter due to Ill health, I may not be able to work again, I am living on my army pension which bars me from claiming some or all benefits, I use coal for heating and have to buy in bulk to get it delivered, i am sawing up pallets by hand to keep warm now, but that only gets fuel for a chilly evening, no good in the winter. I am broke, how can i get coal this winter ?
Average use autumn winter is one tonne, 40 x 25 kilo bags.

This is a link which contains organisations which might be able to assist you.

Sorry that I can't be of greater assistance, as there are clearly different structures to those either currently working within the Armed Forces, or currently receiving a pension. Firstly, have you contacted the CAB for advice? if not, I suggest you do so immediately, you can either make an appointment and visit them personally or over the telephone, however, they also have an on-line web-chat service, which from personal experience, I have found to be extremely professional and very satisfactory.
Secondly, (someone please correct me if I'm wrong), but isn't there an actual forum here on MSE, specifically designed for members / ex-members of the Armed Forces? If so, you might receive a more helpful response from a member of that forum.
I wish you all the best, keep safe and warm.CompairHolman wrote: »I had to give up work last winter due to Ill health, I may not be able to work again, I am living on my army pension which bars me from claiming some or all benefits, I use coal for heating and have to buy in bulk to get it delivered, i am sawing up pallets by hand to keep warm now, but that only gets fuel for a chilly evening, no good in the winter. Don't really want to get army charities involved as there are seriously injured solders now that need the funds.
It seems that there are schemes for help with gas and electric heating but not solid fuel.0 -
Your army pension is treated as an income for some benefits but not all. Depending on which elements you are paid - for example many councils ignore a war disablement pension when it comes to calculating housing benefit.
Stick your claim in, declare what you get and the worst they can do is say no. SSFA may well be able to offer advice - I know you want them to preserve funds for the badly injured but would you be happy to ask them for advice?0 -
https://www.entitledto.co.uk/ or contact citizens advice or the benefits agency.
https://www.ssafa.org.uk/help-you/veterans Ask for help with finding other benefits. Let them decide if they can afford to help you.0 -
it doesn't matter that the help isn't with solid fuel. if you qualify for the warm home discount then the saving on electricity will leave you more money for the solid fuel0

Don't let your pride stop you contacting SSAFA or the British Legion, if there is help out there they will be able to advise you, that is what they exist for. I say this as an Army Veteran. I hope you get the help you need. Good LuckLife is too short to drink bad wine!0
