Dentist Charges and Free Treatment

Hi everyone,
I Would appreciate if anyone can tell me the rules regarding free dental treatment and charges as I am now confused after my appointment today.
I had an emergency appt a while ago regarding a filling that had fell out along with a portion of the tooth. The dentist (a different one to my usual) said as I wasn't in pain he would see me again the next avail. appt and he just placed a dressing. The next appt was for 6 weeks time. Anyway about 4 weeks later I was having excruciating pain also in the roof of my mouth behind the tooth it was throbbing like mad and felt like it was on fire I felt quite unwell.
I managed to get in to see my usual dentist next day where he said it was obvious it was beyond saving and he could pull it out there and then and I just wanted it out. I'm a full time carer for my husband and I just couldn't put up with this as well.
Fast forward another 6 weeks to discuss my options and he said oh yes it is healing nicely and when I asked what my options are as he agreed the gap was quite large at the side and I am very self conscious he explained 3 options. All were chargeable from £250 for small removable pallet, £1200 for a bridge as it is a charge of £400 for the gap and 400 to be fixed to the 2 outer teeth and I should think about it. As I receive free treatment normally I am now wondering if these costs would apply to me I am so confused about it all. Any input would be much appreciated.

From what you say, the dentist told you that all 3 options were chargeable. On that basis I would assume that they fall outside the work which is covered by NHS treatment and the costs will apply to you.

I also have gaps at the side due to extractions when younger. Getting these gaps 'filled' is a cosmetic procedure so all chargeable....I have just lived with it
  • Thanks for replies. I am not a vain person or anything. But it is 2 together now so the gap is large and very noticeable upper left 4 and 5 I am very self conscious about it. Bad teeth on a woman looks horrendous in my opinion. I will just have to see what I can afford I can't just leave it.

I recently had some dental work done and the cost was about £54, while I was there I enquirer about a similar problem to yours (gaps top and bottom both sides) and ended up getting dentures. They cost about £235 but that included all other treatment involved in the initial £54 too. If you can afford it go for the bridge and avoid dentures, they are a nightmare and spend most time in my picket.
    Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.
  • if you receive the relieveant benefits to get free dental care, then a denture can be supplied free of charge as this is included on NHS treatment.
