You will be on a domestic flight. No immigration but you will pass through TSA controlled security. You need to show a valid government issued ID which is checked against your boarding pass (a few years back I could travel on my EU driving licence but now I get asked for my passport for ID).
  • No immigration in this situation.

I suspect your confusion may be coming from reading about what happens when arrive into the US on an international flight, then immediately connect to a domestic service. In that situation, you go through immigration at the airport where you first arrive in the US. You even have to pick up your luggage and then drop it off again in the same airport before catching your connection! (This drives me mad, it's always a convoluted process - why can't they just check it through?)

why can't they just check it through?

Because they want to make you walk through the customs post with your baggage

If you're spending a couple of days in NY and want to see the sights you may need to book some in advance, as they fill up fast.
    e.g.
    Top of the Rock
    Liberty Tours
If you have several weeks before you go you may have time to book a Big Apple Greeter who'll show you round.

Might as well make good use of your time there!
