I've been in Cannes during late Sept-late Oct for the last 12 years and I can only remember one of those weeks being anything other than mid 20c's and sunshine with beach/sea still attractive and a far more sensible temperature for kids. Late evening al-fresco dining is a bit cooler but with kids that's unlikely to be too much of an issue for you. For a slightly shorter journey why not consider Annecy - lakes/mountains/suntrap and some nice restaurants/play areas

Thank you for all your suggestions and tips.

I might try to reschedule some things to go in the second week in September. We've also found a lovely villa near Cognac that I'm considering. There seems to be lots of child friendly things to do, sandy beach, kids forest, aquarium, play parks, water park, etc. Plus it's 5 hours from Caen so we, or just OH, can drive there and we won't need a hire car or worry about transporting car seats.

why not look at a coach holiday to spain. weather should be ok and a lot less hassle than going by train and could work out a lot cheaper

Coincidently a friend has just gone to Spain by coach. I would definitely consider it when the children are older. It's a long journey but you have more freedom of movement on a coach than in a car.
