GBES didn't transfer my acct and are chasing me for payment! Can this affect credit?

in Energy
In March I transferred my gas and electricity from GB Energy Supply (which had been acquired by Co-op Energy after going bust) to Iresa. I have regularly been paying Iresa, and Iresa only, since then. I was in credit, so GB Energy sent me a refund for ca. £ 450 a few weeks later.
I have never received any statements, nor any request to submit meter readings, from GB Energy, so I assumed the transfer went smoothly. But no. A few days ago I received a letter from GB demanding payment of £ 539.
I called them, and they said that as far as they can see I have never transferred to another supplier – which doesn’t make sense, because why did they refund me £450 then? The lady on the phone said they would "put a hold on the account and investigate".
I called the helpline that confirms the gas supplier of each property, and they said it’s GB. Oh, I have double checked and both GB and Iresa have my correct gas meter number.
In the meanwhile I have received another menacing letter demanding payment. I called GBES again, and they said they are transferring my account to IRESA but this may take a while. The lady said this won't affect my credit rating but I am not sure if I should believe her. I am remortgaging: what are the risks that they put some kind of default on my credit file and the mortgage lender rejects me?
I'd like to think it's low, because credit file may easily be 2-3 months old, and by that time I should have been approved for the mortgage, but I'm not sure.
This is the most pressing question. The other question is: since I have been paying IRESA since March, I assume that GBES will correct their mistake and realise I don't owe them a penny. Is this correct? Of course I have all the statements proving I have been paying IRESA since March.
Thanks!

The gaining supplier is responsible for managing the transfer of supply, this includes giving your old supplier validated meter readings on transfer. You will not pay for the same energy twice. Best of luck sorting this out with Iresa: you will need it.
PS if the database states that GB is your supplier, then GB is your supplier not Iresa. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I, like you, assume that if you continue to ignore the alleged debt, it will all sort itself out...
