Child tax credits - will we be entitled?

Hello all

My husband and I have recently become effectively unemployed due to our small business failing.

We have both applied for income based job seekers allowance but i am totally confused by child tax credits!

When we had jobs through our business we were earning, but will now be on JSA. So when (before we registered for JSA) I put in the income figure on the government calculator it says no we don't qualify, but when I just say that we will be on JSA it doesn't even ask about earnings to date.

I guess what I'm basically saying is do we qualify for CTC while unemployed and receiving JSA regardless of what we earned this tax year before being made unemployed? I read somewhere that if on JSA you get the maximum CTC which will be amazing and will keep the kids fed till were back on our feet.

Thank you

Income based JSA awards you maximum CTC.

you say you have 'both applied for income related JSA'.
    what do you mean?

you can't receive income related benefits as individuals, they have to be claimed as a couple. one of you has to claim for you both
  • Yes we claimed as a couple. That's the same as saying both of us isn't it? Upsetting time in our life - sorry if language isn't perfect.

im not being critical ... just making sure that you haven't made an error that could cause you trouble going forward.

the fact that you used the word 'both' rather than saying we made a claim for income related JSA made me feel the need ti check.

sorry if you thought someone trying to help was being picky., but wouldn't you rather that than potentially making a wrong claim?

Yes you will have a Joint claim where only one of you needs to sign on.
