Tax credits confusion - help!

I entered into a career break to care for my disabled child, I updated tax credits as I was still receiving a portion of my salary albeit much less. I then had a text saying I'm owed over £2k in tax credits which I reported to HMRC as a possible scam, but they replied to say this was a reputable company, however they would take a cut. In the meantime I have decided to extend my career break completely unpaid until next May. I advised tax credits last week as I will be receiving considerably less than my original prediction for the year had I returned to work next week. However I've just checked online and there is a 'one off payment' due tomorrow of around £10 less than my normal payment, but then looking at the next 3 payments they're even less! How can it go down? TIA

Just to add, this relates to child tax credits only, we have never qualified for working tax credits.0

Without knowing anything about your claim or circumstances it's not possible to say why it's gone down.0

You might not have received any working tax credit payments but you may have had the elements included in your award. As DS says you need to give more detail.
