How many years of national insurance contributions do you need to qualify for the state pension

    If you are just starting out on your working life, currently 35 years.

    But if you are older and have contributed under the old system (prior to the new simpler State Pension coming in on 6th April 2016) then it could be more or less, as adjustments are made to account for your record under the old system - for example whether you were 'contracted in' or 'contracted out', if you built up any additional State Pension (SERPS/S2P) etc...

    Therefore those in middle age and beyond need to check their individual forcasts to see how many years they'll need to add going forward to get to the new maximum.
