Tax Credits - overpaid?

Hi All,
Grateful for advice.
In May last year I started a new job with a significant pay increase which was reported to HMRC on the day I started my new role. My tax credits dropped to zero immediately so I assumed claim closed.
i am now being asked to complete the annual declaration for tax credits which covers the whole of last year and would indicate that I have an overpayment.
How does this work when you change during the year? Will I be allowed to keep that money based on the fact I was entitled to it when I received it or will I need to pay it back as my income over the whole year was over the threshold?
Many Thanks

Tax credits looks at your income over the whole tax year so if you have an increase during the year then it is possible you could be overpaid.0
