Automatic Tax Refund?

Hi All,

Hope you can help.

I was made redundant last year (July 2016) and paid a hefty whack on part of my redundancy pay.

Just wondering when I should expect to receive a tax refund?

Or should I be doing something, I read something about a P800, but don't know what that is and it says something about receiving end of September? Is there not something I can do to speed it up?

I didn't get a job until November and it's on a far reduced wage than before.

I've actually had an updated tax code because I owed them money, lol.

I have all my P45, P60 information.

TIA

If you started work again in November your tax should have sorted itself out by the end of the tax year. If you think you've paid the wrong amount you need to call HMRC.

What was your total pay and tax for the year?

Thanks for the reply, I'm due just over £1000 tax which I knew already.

Seemingly a P11d is causing the issue from my previous employer (whom I left last July) and they said they can't do anything until that is received which my previous (well previous previous company) doesn't need to send out to July.

Need to speak to my old boss who was made redundant at the same time and ask how he received his automatic tax refund.

  • Why have you waited until now, couldn't you have arranged for the correct tax code to be issued so you could have had any refund via your wages between November and March?

The P11D issue has cropped up before on the cutting board and there doesnt seem to be any way round it, just hope your ex employer doesn't leave everything till the last minute!

I haven't waited till now though, I don't know how all this nonsense goes with tax, but for me the tax office have just fobbed me off. Since I was made redundant I've phoned them around 3 or 4 times and on each occasion it was "Your employer should pay it", then it was "Your employer may not be in a position to pay it", then it was leave it for 6 weeks and then apply if you haven't found a new job. Then finally it was "It'll sort itself out at end of tax year", which actually means 5 months after the tax year actually finishes by the looks of things.

As I said to the tax office member on the phone, it's funny how they can pre-judge that I owe them money so change my tax code, but can't tell that I'm due money.

You can't get a tax refund until your total taxable income is known, it's as simple as that. The tax office can't be blamed for it as they have explained they require your P11d which is still within the timescale for your employer to submit.

How can a manager who earns far more than me have a tax refund then? It's all very confusing.

He has received no P11 yet, as I've spoke with him.

He was refunded via his current employer.

  • You don't get tax overpaid in one year repaid via an employer in a later tax year so he is almost certainly talking about a refund of tax overpaid in the current tax year, a different situation to your original question
