Landlord wants to raise my rent nearly £200 what to do?

    From what i read you are saying you can only give notice on the same month that your tenancy started. Never heard that before. Or you just mean the start of the month which you paid?
  • You need to align your notice period to your rental period so say you pay rent on the 3rd of the month, you need to give notice by the 2nd that you intend to move out before the next rent is due so you'd leave by 2nd of the next month.

    No, you can only give notice to end on the last day of a rental PERIOD (i.e. a month if you pay your rent monthly).

    e.g. if your tenancy started on 10th Sept, the periods are now 10th - 9th of next month. Your notice must give a clear rental period notice, so give notice before 10 April to expire 9May. You can't just give notice on the 3rd April to expire in 30days or something.

    Best to just find another flat and give notice. If the landlord is looking at a void he may well back down and you can decide which flat you like best?

    What I noticed is they are saying the rent hasn't increased since 2003 which is incorrect he increased it a few years ago from 550 to 575 whether that is of any consequence I don't know?

    What will you do when they stop your tax credits because your attempts at self employment are not judged to be meaningful, or you're moved to Universal Credit and have no choice as to what work you have to do? They are actively reviewing cases like yours to stop people using benefits as a lifestyle choice, and as others have said, with your skill set there is no need for you to be reliant on state support.

    No that's not what I said. It is explained in the link I gave you and saajan has also explained it with a worked example.

    Ok the landlord would not budge an inch.

    If my rent is taken on the 23rd then when should I give notice. That means I have to wait to 23rd of april and give notice? If so that will give me 2 months almost to look for a new place and since the rent increase was set to be from may1 as they said in the section 13 that means I avoid paying the higher price.
