Lucy In The Sky: a drawing competition
Following rehearsals a day previous, The Beatles began recording ‘Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds’ on 1st March 1967 and completed it on 2nd March 1967. The track took its name from a pastel drawing of a school friend that was made by 4-year-old Julian Lennon.
“My son came home with a drawing and showed me this strange-looking woman flying around. I said, 'What is it?' and he said, 'It's Lucy in the sky with diamonds,' and I thought, 'That's beautiful.' I immediately wrote a song about it.” – John Lennon.
The song was mostly written by John Lennon incorporating psychedelic imagery, with a little help from Paul McCartney.
“I remember coming up with 'cellophane flowers' and 'newspaper taxis' and John answered with things like 'kaleidoscope eyes' and 'looking glass ties'.” – Paul McCartney.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the song, The Beatles Story are asking fans from all over the world to create their own artistic interpretation of the song’s lyrics to be in with a chance to win one of four fab prizes. To enter simply submit a photograph of your artwork using the form as well as a short description. Competition is open to all ages and nationalities.
Winners will be judged by Julia Baird, John Lennon’s sister and auntie to Julian Lennon shortly after the closing date. Full lyrics to the song can be found below:
Picture yourself in a boat on a river
With tangerine trees and marmalade skies
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly
A girl with kaleidoscope eyes
Cellophane flowers of yellow and green
Towering over your head
Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes
And she's gone
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds Aaaaahhhhh...
Follow her down to a bridge by a fountain
Where rocking horse people eat marshmallow pies
Everyone smiles as you drift past the flowers
That grow so incredibly high
Newspaper taxis appear on the shore
Waiting to take you away
Climb in the back with your head in the clouds
And you're gone
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds Aaaaahhhhh...
Picture yourself on a train in a station
With Plasticine porters with looking-glass ties
Suddenly someone is there at the turnstile
The girl with kaleidoscope eyes
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds Aaaaahhhhh...
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds Aaaaahhhhh...
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
