BT Took same payment twice, not covered under DDG?

I signed a direct debit with BT and the direct debit guarantee said I am intitled to an immediate refund if there is an error made on eiter side. I just called my bank and I was told to get BT to sort it and it would take a few days. I cant afford to wait 4 days because I have now paid this amonut twice (1x Card payment and 1x Direct Debit) and it is for £37.50, which I need for other things.
Can someone please advise me why the bank says the DDG is not worth the paper its written on?
Thanks
Kev

The direct debit guarantee says that if the bank or BT makes an error the bank will refund it immediately - not if you do so.
If BT told you they were going to take a bill payment by direct debit and you paid it some other way as well - then this is not covered by the direct debit guarantee..
