What a coincidence. I have been asking a similar question, simply because a guy at Curry's told my son they wouldn't work on Vista. You will see from the replies they do. One of the links is the "cheapest laptop" thread at the top, look at the last page, and the other is regarding What sort of spec should I be looking for? .

I just found this which adds to the confusion:-
Why stick with XP instead of Vista?

    Yes it will, see here

However as it is in 'extended support' there will be no more service packs and if you do have a problem running it on Vista Microsoft won't fix it. But basically, yes, it will work.

Islandman just print off that Microsoft page and shove it in front of your son's helpful Curry's salesman.

If you have such an old version of office (ie pre 2003) then may be it's owrth considering getting Open Office, that way you get an office package just as good as Office 2003 without spending anything extra.
