Credit Check for a mobile phone contract

Hi all,
I'm with o2 at the moment but my contract is up soon. I was looking around for a deal and Vodafone were giving me the best offer so I tried to join them yesterday. However I failed the credit check somehow (I have 999 out of 999 on experian and have never missed a payment for anything - mortgage, utilities, anything). I've done some research now and it seems to be a problem with Vodafone so I'll give them a swerve now.
Vodafone can't tell me if they have actually done a search on my credit history and I'm reluctant to pay to find out.
Therefore I'm trying to get a deal with my current provider o2. As I'm already a contract customer, will o2 do another search on my credit history as I believe having too many searches on my file in a short space of time can affect my score?
Long story short - will my current provider do a credit check if I go for another deal with them?

Bit of an update on this. I've had a quick online search and it seems that o2 will do a credit check.
As I supposedly failed one yesterday will it affect my chances of upgrading if I apply for a new contract with o2 because I have done this in quick succession?0
