HD DVD's

Is it correct that if you buy these type of DVD's they would be playable on our DVD players? I'm thinking of getting a friend to bring home an American DVD which is HD DVD. We have a Panasonic DVD player and a TV but although it is an HD one we haven't paid for this to be set up. Thanks.

If it is a pure HD DVD release then no - you will need a HD DVD player.
Some HD DVDs are released as hybrid/combo - they can be played on both normal DVD and HD DVD players - when played in a normal player it plays at the low resolution, in a HD player the high resolution - one version on each side like the old standard/widescreen flippers you used to get.
Just to clarify - if it's a HD DVD release only then it won't play on a standard DVD player.......Neil0
