Can I downgrade my tariff again if I upgrade it?

I've currently got an iPhone 7 Plus on contract with O2. I pay £40 per month and for that I get Unlimited calls and texts, plus 5GB of data.
Although I didn't go over my allowance in the first month, I felt like I had to ration my data and I didn't feel like I had much freedom. But now that it's over 30 days, I can upgrade my tariff, and the next best deal is £50 per month for 20GB of internet. Although as much as that internet allowance is more than enough, I don't know if £50 per month is going to stretch it too much, I mean I already am struggling with money slightly at the moment, though I start a new Christmas temp job part time tomorrow which should help me out.
Anyway, that aside, if I was to upgrade to say £50 per month and decided it was too much, would I be able to downgrade back down to my £40 per month tariff?

It's not that it'll stretch me, but I'm just debating whether or not it would be worth it or not. Like if I start using more than 5GB per month then it will be, but otherwise if I'm using less then can I downgrade back?0 -
AFAIK with o2 you can upgrade to the next highest tariff but you can't downgrade until you've reached the end of your minimum monthly term and are in the market for a new handset/SIMO deal.
I *think* Virgin Mobile are the only ones where you can swap up and down each month with their tariffs.
A. if you are slightly stretched don't do it. B. It's a temporary Christmas job. If it's highly likely you won't be taken on in the New Year and don't have another job to fall back on afterwards then you'll be paying £50/month on top of your other expenses. It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.0 -
Seemingly notYou can upgrade your tariff at any time, and you can move back the tariff you originally upgraded to, however you won’t be able to reduce your tariff to a lower one until your next upgrade.
You will not be able to move to a lower priced tariff.

If it won't stretch you (your 2 posts seem a bit contradictory in this regard) and you think you need more data then go for it. However, you may be better holding off another month or so and see if you regularly use that much data, or if your current tariff is sufficient.0 -

Yeah that is the issue. I do have income coming in from other sources too, the job is just a bonus at the moment0
