There are 6 types of pedestrian crossings in the UK.
1) school crossing
2) zebra crossing
3) Pelican crossing
4) Puffin crossing
5) toucan crossing
6) Pegasus.
why can't there be just merge Pelican , Puffin and toucan crossing into one type.
pedestrian or cyclist press stop button..turns green man..walk across.
car stops when it is red light..go when it is green light..
simple!

Cost ? Maybe a lot will be changed to one type when they are due replacement. Does it really make that much difference (apart from some drivers not understanding that you can go on flashing amber) ?0

And does anyone actually know (or care) what the difference is between these?

Knew my Toucan from my Pelican - and approve of the distinction.
The distinction between Puffin and Pelican had passed me by, and not sure they really need to have any differentiation.
Never seen a Pegasus crossing - though can see how the kit needs adaption. Though given the behaviour of most drivers around horse riders is utterly abysmal*, I can see the need for level crossing type gates.
* two occurrences spring to mind.
One where I indicated to pass the horse, moved over to the right as far as I could and passed slowly. The car behind obviously decided I was parking or something and sped through the gap between me and the horse. TW4T !
The second one was where I was driving down a local road. Two riders in front, one who's horse has decided to have one of those "I'm spooked by everything" moments and was having difficulty controlling it. So I stop in the middle of the road about 50 yds back with hazards on. Another car comes along behind me (was not in view when I stopped), mounts the verge to pass me, and speeds past the two riders with predictable results. TW4T TOO !!
Another aside, relating to Toucan and Pegasus crossings. Horses really do not like cyclists for some reason - not in a minority-psychopathic-motorist way, we just seem to be really spooky to them. Ring your bell well back as a warning to the rider and pass VERY wide and VERY slow ...0 -

But that's exactly what happens.
Drivers who come across a pegasus crossing for the first time aren't completely baffled, are they? "What could that red light possibly mean?!"

Make whatever changes we can afford but for pity's sake please keep the tactile alert that tells you when it is safe to cross.
A blind lady explained the rotating grooved cone to us & our Scouts have crossed in greater safety & with curiosity appeased for months!
Any road user failing to pass horses with care deserves everything they get, as a frightened horse is a force of nature. No reflection on the rider (who may well be unconscious on the floor & even more vulnerable to a misplaced hoof), plenty on the other road users... Says she who has seen riding school staff with bodycams & thinks it an excellent idea.0 -

I can't see cyclists being too happy about having to dismount and walk across.0 -

I hope they call it a Pucan crossing0 -
I was taught last year that puffin crossings get installed nowadays where they would previously have been pelican (PEdestrian LIght CONtrolled versus Pedestrian User FFriendly INteligent*- the puffins have the sensors to hold the traffic until the crossing is clear, and that will not stop the traffic if the pedestrian manages to cross before the lights change.)
I feel that zebra crossings suit quieter roads well, but sometimes they're installed on busy routes and cause traffic backlog. In our local town there's one right outside the cinema, where huge strings of pedestrians hold up the traffic for ages, sometimes holding it right back to block a box junction at the end of that road. Here, a puffin would be better in terms of traffic flow, with little inconvenience to those crossing.
* When my driving instructor asked me about the different types of crossing he was relatively impressed that I knew the different kinds, but he then blew my mind with the revelation that pelican and puffin are acronyms. It's one of my favourite facts
They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.

Most people know two types
- those with traffic lights
- those without
Problem with the latter is it requires more attention from the motorist so ime can be a lucky dip as to whether cars stop!!! Especially those in supermarket car parks0 -
