Balance transfer card number mistake

I will admit that I am the dummy in this whole story, but yesterday I requested a balance transfer online to transfer a balance from a Virgin credit card to a Halifax credit card.

For reasons that are unimportant because inexplicable, I used the Virgin card number from an old card that had been replaced (I still have both cards in my possession).

Quickly realising my mistake I phoned Halifax immediately to ask them what would happen. After some hesitation and uncertainty, I was told by Halifax that as the two Virgin cards (the old and the new one) are linked to the same credit card account the balance transfer would be successful.

Not taking them at the word, I phoned Virgin who, again, after some hesitation and uncertainty, said the balance transfer would not be successful (though the CSR at one point modified that to 'may not be successful').

As I had used my old credit card number when I contacted Virgin to test what would happen (and it was accepted), I am keen to believe it will go through.

Anyone been dumb enough to do this and know what is likely to happen - and if it is rejected by Virgin how long it will take Halifax to 'recredit' my card account?

Comments

  • If both cards are linked to same account then it will go on account correctly.
  • To thank bengalknights and to confirm it would seem that that is true and the balance transfer has completed successfully.

My concern was that once a card had expired (not true in this case as both cards were still within their validity dates) or been replaced (not entirely sure why they sent me a replacement, I never asked for one or reported the original lost or stolen) that the link would 'disappear' leaving the money in limbo or - as Virgin suggested - ready to be rejected by them.

I suspect (but it is only a suspicion) that if the original card had, at some point, been reported lost or stolen, that the situation would be different, but regardless, in my case, doing something dumb did not impact on the outcome I'd hoped for, which slightly balances out the many times for me in the past that it has.
