Police caution. Tell employer?

I have been with a company for 8 months so relatively new. I was cautioned for possession of the A kind. Am I obliged to tell the my employer?
From the contract I can see no clear statement that if I'm cautioned I have to report this but I can see under conduct that, if I am under the influence that effects my job during office hours or at a sponsored event this is deemed as gross misconduct.
I did have a CRB check at the start of my position and everything was ok. I'm quite worried as this caution now stays spent for 3 to 5 years and unspent there after but will be with for the rest of my life/career.

If you had a criminal records check at the beginning of your employment then it would follow that you should inform your employer if this record changes. Do you come into contact with vulnerable people through your work?0

I presume that you mean you had a DBS check?
Technically, assuming this is a DBS check, there is nothing to say that you must tell the employer. But if they find out anyway, and they may, then it will be a lot worse for you. It is recommended that employers repeat checks every three years, so it would come out then if not before.0 -
Just passing through but wow - only a caution for possession of Class A?0

Is this caution since you started work with the employer? If so, you're certainly on shaky ground whether you tell them or not.Signature removed for peace of mind0

Thanks for the responses. I do not work with vunreable people I work with sensitive data. My gut feeling was yes tell hr and then my manager. Better to come from me than any other source.
To the person on shaky ground. Please I'm not an addict have never harmed anyone and this was one of the few occasions. The law is the law and they saw this as a minor offence.0 -
Hey, are you desperate for a class A fix? Ok no probs... Oh you dont have any cash on you? You spent it all already? Where do you work? Oh really..... Tell you what, I know someone who could use yours services.. get me this information on that person and in return you can have your [enter class A drug].
Employer could possibly view that scenario happening, hence DBS checks. I cant tell you to tell them or not BUT you know what the right thing is im sure.. Unfortunately the right thing is not always the best for us.
BUT you committed a crime, you knew what you was doing, got caught, this is the consequence.
But as stated, they WILL find out eventually, you can keep it from them and when it comes close to end of year 2 you will have to spend your 3rd year with anxiety worrying what will happen when they find out. And when they find out that you didnt tell them, all bets will be off.0 -
I think you should tell your employer, because you will complete another DBS application before it runs out. Its far better they here this information from you, than through a DBS applicationTrinidad - The hottest place to go0

XapprenticeX has put it baldly, but they are correct. Nobody is an addict until they realise they are. Usually long after everyone else knows they are. If you use it so seldom, stop now. And I am not saying that to be judgemental about illegal drugs - I'd say more or less the same thing to someone with legal ones. Your job is not worth the risk. What you have done is really no different than turning up to work with a hangover - dicing with your employment. Unfortunately, in your case, it is going to be viewed somewhat more seriously because it is also illegal. But both deserve a stern word, and I hope that is all it comes to for you.
Have you considered what you intend to say? How did the police happen to pick you up? Because I think just telling them flat out is possibly not the best approach.0 -
Actually, don't tell anyone until you know who gets to see the info on the DBS checks. That's the person you disclose to. The information shouldn't be known to more people than absolutely necessary, so not telling those who don't need to know is your best bet.
8 months: so I think you're in the system where you get sent the information and have to show it to your employer. Who did you have to show it to?Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

My friend's cousin works at GCHQ, wouldn't tell us what he did but did tell us if he does anything naughty eg takes class a or uses the services of a sex worker etc he must inform his line manager on the next day at work. If he tells his boss, there is no problem, if he does not tell them and it's discovered he is in a lot of trouble.
Apparently it's GCHQ's way of ensuring their staff are not open to being blackmailed0
